Artificial Urban Imaginaries

Darío Negueruela del Castillo, the scientific coordinator of DVS, gave a talk entitled “Artificial Urban Imaginaries” at the UNESCO Chair of Urban Landscape at the University of Montréal on July 9th.

In this talk, he outlined the main motivations for and relevance of studying and problematizing the use of multimodal AI models to analyze and interpret urban landscapes. This project aims to dissect and analyze how Generative AI (foundation models, vision-LLMs) encode visual urban and architectural culture in an implicit and distorted ‘urban theory’ of their own.  Conversely, the project also aims to enhance our understanding of urban forms and narratives through AI-driven methodologies. By integrating rich historical data with advanced AI techniques, the research seeks to develop refined methodological frameworks and tools for urban studies that are capable of addressing the complexities of modern and historical urban environments.
