Digital Architectural Histories

Research Area

Our research places itself at the intersection of computational methods and the study of architecture. One branch of this research looks at reactivating the long history of attempts at formalising our experience of space and develops the algorithms needed to manipulate the vast amounts of multimodal data collected about cities — plans, elevations, textual descriptions, 3D scans. The second branch attempts at tracing the archeology of such proto-computational theories — from early-20th century German formalism, to post-war Italian typo-morphology, and 1980s British Space Syntax. This dual approach, encouraging a dialogue between recent computational methods and intellectual history, ensures that Digital Architectural History can be anchored in a constructive epistemological critique.
